Lean IT
We're seeing a horde of attempts to improve technology and how it's built, deployed, and operated. But these initiatives, while well-intentioned, miss the point: Lean Startup, Agile Development, Devops, Continuous Deployment, and Cloud Computing, are inextricably linked. Organizations can't just have some of them and expect to reap the benefits of
their entirety, and much of the disappointment and disillusionment companies experience comes from not having a holistic perspective.
In this session CloudOps Research founder and Cloud Connect content chair Alistair Croll will look at what it means to deliver end-to-end "Lean IT", and how only then can a company move from being and organization to being an organism
- Lew Tucker, Vice President and CTO, Cloud Computing, Cisco
Cloud Computing, SDN, and the Internet of Everything Open source cloud platforms such as OpenStack now allow anyone to build their own public or private cloud. This accelerates private cloud platforms usage to not only meet the needs of rapid application development and deployment of enterprise apps, but when combined with SDN also changes the nature of "infrastructure as a service" as a platform for consumer-facing services. Come explore with us this virtuous cycle created by cloud computing, software defined networking, and the internet of everything.
- Michael Barrett, Chief Information Security Officer, PayPal
Details to come. - William Ruh, Vice President and Global Technology Director, General Electric
The Emerging Industrial Internet The industrial world is undergoing a seismic shift in productivity and efficiency as machines become increasingly intelligent. This shift will result in the creation of an Industrial Internet that will have the same transformative effect as the consumer internet. Intelligence is brought about through innovative sensor technology, machine to machine connectivity, new approaches to automation, services and the cloud, and most importantly software that gives insight to people in real-time. This talk will explore the big question for companies that want to win and survive in today's economy: focus on existing products and business models or create new integrated hardware/software solutions and services that is greater than the sum of the individual parts.
- Kit Colbert, Chief Architect and Principal Engineer, VMWare
Who Feeds Paris? Changing the Mindset of IT Millions of people live in Paris and each of them eat at least three times a day. How can a government ensure that just the right amount of food is sent to the right grocery stores and restaurants to feed its citizens? As Charles Wheelan states in his book Naked Economics, “…somehow the right amount of fresh tuna makes its way from a fishing fleet in the south Pacific to a restaurant on the Rue de Rivoli. A neighborhood fruit vendor has exactly what his customers want every morning even though those products may come from many different countries.” The reality is that it’s impossible for any central agency to control all this. It’s just too much for any one person or group to keep in their heads. The superiority of a market economy over central government planning is so clear that it seems obvious to us. But if it is so obvious, why is IT still run using central planning?
Kit will address the central planning model of IT and why it can't keep up with today's business demands. He will empower IT to move to a true self-service model that will allow for the adoption of new technologies, while changing their mindset of how they provide services to their users. His ideas will show IT admins to CIOs that they can maintain control, realize the future of self-service clouds, and unleash technical innovation simply by rethinking their process.
- Dave McCrory, SVP of DSP (Platform) Engineering at Warner Music Group
The Origin of Data Gravity
As data beings to collect, especially in larger Clouds and datastores, it causes exponential data growth, attracting applications and services closer to the data. While this cause and effect relationship appears to be direct, there is an underlying reason that extends past this seemingly simple relationship to a much deeper and complex one. What causes the Data Gravity effect? Is it simply more Data or is it something else?
In this session Independent Data Physics Researcher and SVP of Engineering for Warner Music Group, Dave McCrory will talk about his latest research into the causes and origins of Data Gravity. He will also discuss how the effects of Data Gravity can be both leveraged and altered depending on the desired outcome.
Cloud Formations: A Framework for Cloud Decision Making
