New Dream Network, LLC (DreamHost), Co-Founder
Sage Weil co-founded New Dream Network, the company behind DreamHost Webhosting (Dreamhost.com), while enrolled at Harvey Mudd University. After graduation, Sage designed the Ceph distributed file system as part of his PhD research in Storage Systems at the University of California, Santa Cruz. With the help of a dedicated team of developers, Sage continues to refine Ceph with the goal of providing a stable next generation distributed file system for Linux.
As the size and performance requirements of storage systems have increased, ?le system designers have looked to new architectures to facilitate system scalability. This session will describe Ceph, a highly scalable, open source, distributed storage system which was recently integrated into the mainline Linux kernel. The features, benefits and limitations of the different storage solutions available in the marketplace today - open source and proprietary – will be explored. The benefits of implementing a solution such as Ceph when creating a powerful “Storage Cloud” will then be discussed, as well as the security benefits of having complete control of your software, hardware and most importantly data, something that may put your corporate counsel and possibly SOX auditors at ease. Using specific use cases, you’ll identify key factors that should be considered when choosing a storage solution, as well as the value Ceph can bring and how you can start testing it for yourself. Finally, the session will end with a discussion on the future of large scale distributed storage.
