You're ready to embrace cloud computing. You can move your IT to on-demand public clouds, and reap the benefits of elasticity; or you can create on-premise clouds that make you more agile and efficient while keeping control of data. The only thing you can't afford to do is keep using old-fashioned IT. But when it's time to adopt a cloud strategy, the options can be daunting. Do you need a public cloud? Private? Both? Should you use a platform or an infrastructure cloud? Which applications are candidates for cloud deployment?
In this opening session, you'll learn the differences between public and private clouds, and the factors you need to consider when planning a migration to cloud-based IT. Moderator - Randy Bias, Founder, Cloudscaling Randy is the expert cloud providers like VMware, EngineYard, Internap, and GoGrid consult when they need help. His cloud strategy consulting firm, Cloudscaling, advises Fortune 500 companies like Kaiser Permanente with their internal cloud initiatives. He has driven innovations in infrastructure, IT, Operations, and 24×7 service delivery since 1990. He was the technical visionary on the executive team of GoGrid & ServePath, a major cloud computing provider. Prior to GoGrid, he built the world’s first multi-cloud, multi-platform cloud management framework at CloudScale Networks, Inc. Randy is recognized as one of the top cloud bloggers and twitterers. The Cloudscaling blog has tens of thousands of page views every month. In addition to his contributions as a top cloud blogger, Randy’s open licensing of the GoGrid API inspired many others to open license their cloud APIs including Sun Microsystems, Rackspace Cloud, and VMware's vCloud. Speaker - Ellen Rubin, Founder & VP Products, CloudSwitch Speaker - Geva Perry, Author, Thinking Out Cloud Speaker - Victoria Livschitz, CEO, GridDynamics Speaker - Tom Gregory, CTO, Presidio Health

While it's easy to make mistakes with cloud deployments, most of the pitfalls can be avoided with a good understanding of cloud architectures. Knowing which architecture fits which enterprise application is critical. If you're responsible for defining cloud strategy, you need know what kinds of applications you're migrating, what your industry will tolerate in terms of privacy and governance, where the best economics are, and much, much more.
In this session, we'll look at real-world cloud adoption from a case study perspective. Hear from end users, technology vendors, and service providers about which adoption strategies are right for you and where to start your migration. We'll cover emerging design patterns for specific applications, including batch processing, three-tiered web applications, and legacy enterprise applications. You'll leave knowing what works, what doesn't, and what a successful migration plan looks like. Speaker - Michael Crandell, CEO, RightScale Michael Crandell is the CEO and a founder of RightScale, where he provides the vision and direction for the company as it pioneers innovative ways to bring the power of cloud computing to any organization. Crandell is a frequent speaker at cloud computing industry conferences, and he has played a major role in helping establish and promote openness and transparency in the cloud market. Prior to RightScale, he served as CEO at several Internet Software-as-a-Service (SAAS) companies and as executive vice president at eFax.com. Crandell received his B.A. from Stanford University and completed graduate studies at Harvard University. Speaker - George Reese, CTO, enStratus George Reese is the founder of Minneapolis-based enStratus Networks LLC, maker of high-end cloud infrastructure management tools. He is a founding member of the Cloud Security Alliance and author of a number of technology books, including MySQL Pocket Reference, Database Programming with JDBC and Java, Java Database Best Practices, and Cloud Application Architectures. Throughout the Internet era, George has spent his career building enterprise tools for developers and delivering solutions to the marketing domain. He was an influential force in the evolution of online gaming through the creation of a number of Open Source MUD libraries and he created the first JDBC driver in 1996—the Open Source mSQL-JDBC. Most recently, George has been involved in the development of systems to support the deployment of transactional web applications in the cloud. George holds a BA in Philosophy from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management in Evanston, Illinois. He currently lives in Minnesota with his wife Monique and his daughters Kyra and Lindsey.

Data centers that support on-premise clouds have unique architectural constraints. This session reveals the design and construction of IaaS clouds. You'll learn about direct-attached-storage (DAS) vs. storage area networks (SAN), network topologies, physical isolation, and security considerations. We'll follow up with a Q&A session so you can find out how to build your own cloud offerings internally.
Moderator - Killian Murphy, Cloud Strategist, Cloud Scaling Killian has 16 years technology industry experience within startups and Fortune 100 IT organizations in roles encompassing engineering, management and strategy. As a Director in IT at Credit Suisse in New York for over 5 years, he was responsible for developing, integrating and deploying their internal cloud with over 20,000 virtual servers. The technology his team developed became the foundation of a successful Boston-based startup, DynamicOps. Following the success of this large scale deployment Killian managed cloud strategy in the CTO office until his departure in June 2009. During his work delivering an internal cloud at Credit Suisse, Killian pioneered important areas of internal cloud computing environments, including: * Extensive end-to-end automation * Business requirements for security, billing and organizational or regulatory infrastructure silos * A self-service portal with fine-grained entitlements Moderator - Randy Bias, Founder, Cloudscaling Randy is the expert cloud providers like VMware, EngineYard, Internap, and GoGrid consult when they need help.
