Jim Gray once said that compared to the cost of moving bits around, everything else in computing is essentially free. That's why data is at the core of every cloud offering. Centralized, hosted storage changes the cloud equation, yielding faster analytics, massive data warehouses, and robust, no-single-point-of-failure architectures. In this track, we'll look at the emerging field of "Big Data", and what cloud storage means for IT professionals.

Need to get up to cloud speed in a hurry? This fast-paced, densely packed workshop will give you the foundation you need to understand where utility computing is headed. Join Bitcurrent analyst and Cloud Connect content chair Alistair Croll for a look at the fundamentals of on-demand infrastructure. Cloud Computing is a major shift in IT. It's similar to the switch from circuit- to packet-based networking, or from procedural to object-oriented programming, or from mainframes to client-server models. As with those shifts, some IT professionals will thrive -- and others will become obsolete. Clouds rely on a new set of fundamentals: horizontal scaling, sharding, eventually consistent data systems, virtualization, and more. In this two-hour workshop, we'll cover these fundamentals and understand how they combine to give us today's cloud offerings.
Attendees will learn:
This workshop is aimed at IT professionals who want a solid understanding of cloud issues and design primitives, but it's equally well suited to industry insiders, product managers, and technologists who want to see how to better explain cloud technology to their customers and peers.
Instructor - Alistair Croll, Founder, BitCurrent Alistair is the principal analyst at Bitcurrent; an executive at CloudOps; an advisor to various technology venture firms; the founder of the Bitnorth conference; and the founder of the Human 2.0 blog on emerging technologies. Audience Level: Beginner

Storage matters, and despite the cost of storage coming down all the time operating at scale means that how you store your data and what data you store is becoming increasingly important. With a focus on NoSQL and cloud storage this workshop dives into the history of web architectures, how they've evolved, and where they are going to. Finally the workshop will dive into Amazon S3, Redis, & Basho's Riak datastore. You Will Learn:
Who Should Attend:
Managers, architects and programmers interested in NoSQL and Cloud Data Storage. There will be elements of the workshop that involve programming, but they will be comparatively light and are mainly for illustrative purposes.

He was once referred to as a “Renaissance engineer” by ZFS creator Jeff Bonwick, and has always used “computers” to solve real problems: Starting with ab initio molecular orbital calculations using VAX/VMS machines, and moving on to small molecule design and protein docking while earning a BS and MS in Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA and a PhD in Molecular Pathology at The Burnham Institute and UCSD School of Medicine. Jason taught at the university level for more than a decade, is a prolific speaker and author and a highly-regarded expert on scalable systems. He serves as the Outside Director of the WordPress Foundation, frequently blogs at Joyeur, and most often can be found on twitter when not flying across an ocean in an aisle seat.
